SEVEN DAYS - MACHAME ROUTE RESERVE

DAY 1
Depart Nairobi 8.00am, arrive at Namanga border town at 10.00 hrs. Continue to Arusha for lunch . Drive to Moshi where the afternoon is spent organizing climbing gear. Dinner and overnight stay at a Hotel in Moshi.

DAY 2

Drive to Machame Village. The climb begins at the end of the tarmac road. Walk for about 6hrs, through the forest to the Machame hut (3000m).

DAY 3

Cross the valley and continue along the steep ridge going on to rock ridges and through heather. The route turns west into a river gorge reaching Shira hut (3800m).

DAY 4

Continue east towards Kibo passing the junction, then east towards the Lava Tower. Shortly after this, you climb down to Baranco Hut (3,940m).

DAY 5

There is a steep rocky climb on Baranco walls, then move up and down until you come to Karanga Valley and then on to Barrafu Hut (4,600m).

DAY 6

Very early start for the summit, first to Stella point and then to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). There are two main ways to descend on this route. Marangu or Mweka. The Mweka route - Uhuru - Barrafu - Mweka. The Mweka route - Uhuru- Barrafu - Mweka Hut will take about 6 hours. The route is steep but picturesque. The Marangu route - Uhuru - Kibo - Horombo is the main route, it is easier but can be dusty and busy. It is also longer.

DAY 7

Mweka Hut to Mweka Gate will take about 3 hours, to Moshi then transfer to Nairobi arriving late afternoon.
